Zulu Blonds to do the Challenge
In 35 yrs of racing you can count the number of women who have completed this tough classic race on one hand. 2009 see’s the most unlikely of female entrants . . . back again after a sensational year last year!
The Zululand Brewing Company, from Eshowe in Natal, with their Zulu Blond Beer was the 1st sponsor to sign up for the 2008 Southern Shamaal PE to EL Surfski Challenge 2008 . . . and they are back again causing a collective sigh from all paddlers canvassed about their feeling on the race.
Listed as the ‘Official Hydration supplier, powering the race’ the Natal home grown brand, operated by six time Duzi paddler Richard Chennels, Zulu Blond is set to power one of the Worlds toughest Ocean paddling races for four days in December. Chennels said ‘I have known about this race for years & have always admired the guys who do it, we are delighted to be associating with the race, it’s tough compeditors and dedicated officials. It is a historic & classic race and one that sit’s with our brand well as a traditional African brewery’.
Event MD Anton Erasmus said ‘it is a hell of a test for the athletes & the pressure is on for the seconds as well – so we have associated with a great social brewery to provide some relief from the daily grind.’ The brand is fast getting a support base in the paddling community, due to it’s strong support for the sport. It is billed as being crisp, blonde and refreshing and should be about perfect for the 4 day adventure.
The brewery will hit the road with a mobile bar called the ‘Wandering Keg’ and on route will find a shady spot, hook up the tanks & let the hydration flow. Anton say’s ‘every night there are a load of wary support staff, race seconds & supporters, and few of the races who are really in need of a few cold one’s.

A percentage of local sponsorship funds raised and a percentage of entry fee goes to Development paddling, the local Port Elizabeth paddle school, Dare2 Paddle, has been set up specifically for development paddling and will be tasked with developing paddlers that will do the 2009 Southern Shamaal in a relay format and in 2010 the top development paddler will do the Dubai Shamaal and at least one graduate will do the Southern Shamaal solo in 2010. |
We are excited to be involved once again with this year's "Challenge" - it's an event we have enjoyed being a part of as both supporters and physios. Our team this year consists of 2 physios (myself and Wendy Holliday) and 2 massage therapists.
I have a private practice in Mount Croix, Port Elizabeth (041-3733753) and I have a lot of paddlers as patients in my practice. This will be the third Challenge at which I am providing physiotherapy and massage services and I am a paddler myself.
Wendy is a physiotherapist from Catherine Chambers Physiotherapy which is a practice based at Healthjunction in Vredehoek, Cape Town. She worked with me at last year's Challenge. The Cape Town paddlers can get in touch with her ahead of time and after the event if they have special treatment needs. Pre and post race massages are also offered.
We will have with us all the equipment needed to deliver excellent physiotherapy treatment and/ or massage to the paddlers along the course of the race. As well as massage we can offer physiotherapy treatment including dry needling as well as strapping, with the materials once again kindly sponsored by BSN.
